The Sunken Harbor Holmgang Challenge is a free-for-all PvP event that happens within the Sunken Harbor Area in Coral Forest. This event was disabled with the release of Firefall 1.0 as it wasn't compatible with some of the new mechanics, but we are excited to announce that, starting today, it is back! The Challenge is active every week for 24 hours starting on Tuesdays at 5:00pm PDT (view in your timezone).

When the challenge begins, a dome will spawn over the Sunken Harbor arena which designates the event’s area, and a single ball will be placed in the center of it. The dome is one-way only; once you enter, you won’t be able to leave before the event ends (unless you die). Additionally, anyone who enters the dome is automatically flagged for PvP, meaning they can kill and be killed by other players. When you die, you will respawn just outside the dome, and can re-enter to continue participating should you so wish.

The goal of this challenge is relatively simple: grab onto the ball and carry it for as long as you can survive. Every second you carry the ball will get you one point, and the player with the most points after 20 minutes is the winner. When the ball carrier is killed, the ball will automatically be transferred to whoever killed them.

When the challenge ends, the dome will disappear and rewards will be distributed. Anyone who participated in the event will get XP, Crystite, and a temporary XP boost (all scaled based on their point total), as well as the “Holmganger” title. The winner will receive all of that plus the “Holmgang Champion” title, bonus Crystite, and the Astrek Combat Helmet: a cosmetic item unique to the event. The rewards screen will also show your kills, deaths, assists, point total, and final rank.

A few other details about the event:

  • The self-revive for Credits feature is disabled within the event dome.
  • Every time you pick up the ball, you are healed back to full HP and gain a temporary speed boost and shield. While carrying the ball, you are unable to use any abilities, but you gain small buffs to your jump height, energy pool, and energy regen.
  • There are several powerups scattered around the arena that double the rate at which you gain points (two points per second instead of one) for a short time. These can only be picked up while you have the ball.
  • Hostile creatures will spawn in the arena during the event, giving players another hazard to watch out for.

While this event is active, it will spawn every other in-game night (which is about every four hours). However, a challenge will not take place if a Pirate Raid has already spawned. Players in the Sunken Harbor area will be notified when the event is about to start.

This is an event that we intend to expand and refine going forward. Some things we are already looking to add in the future include a real-time scoreboard for you to track your progress, and bonus rewards for players other than just the winner (for example, special rewards for places 2-5, or rewards for the players with the most kills or assists).
