Hello Firefall players new and old! Today is a momentous occasion in the history of Firefall as this morning we finally released the patch containing all of the updates and new content that we’ve been talking about for months now. Two of the most important pieces of content that were added with that patch that we have yet to discuss are the addition of Open World PvP, along with the completion of Chapter One of Firefall’s Episodic Campaign.

The Conclusion of Chapter One

We are very excited to have added the final three missions of Chapter One to Firefall. This campaign represents beginning of the core of the game’s storyline, so naturally we don’t want to spoil it for you before you get a chance to experience it yourself, but here is a small sneak peek at what you can expect!

  • Mission 6: Power Grab – Forward Operating Base Zephyr has been in Chosen hands long enough. Time to deliver their eviction notice with the ultimate ARES risk-takers, the Devilhawks.

  • Mission 7: Risky Business – Bring the battle to the Blood Kings’ doorstep! Travel with the Devilhawks to the land of the midnight sun and find the data on the Midas.

  • Mission 8: Blackwater Anomaly – Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more! Return to the brackish pools of Blackwater to rescue the missing Devilhawks. Did they find the Midas or was it all for naught?

Existing players will recognize Mission 8, Blackwater Anomaly. However, don’t expect it to be the same old Blackwater, as it has been given a facelift that includes a new story, new epic boss fight, and even a new cinematic cutscene that plays upon its completion.

Open World PvP

Firefall’s Open World Player vs Player combat takes place in its own zone, which is separate from the 3 PvE zones that we have discussed previously. This zone is known as Broken Peninsula, and is approximately the same size as Coral Forest. Broken Peninsula is a resource-rich area that has been relatively untouched by the Melding, making it a very valuable territory for any organization to control. However, it lies far from New Eden, and the Accord, whose resources are tied up in the war against the Chosen, can’t afford to try and control it themselves. As a result, Earth’s numerous corporations vie for control of the area’s rich resource veins, each sponsoring their own ARES teams to tap into those veins and arcport the spoils back to safety in New Eden. There is a strong competition between these corporations, so watch your back; you never know when another corporation’s agents will show up to take your resources!

Team Up

When you join an instance of Broken Peninsula, you (and if you joined while in a squad, your squadmates) will automatically be placed on one of a number of teams which each represent one of the game’s major corporations. The size and number of teams will depend on the amount of players present in the remnant, but it can be anywhere between 3 and 10 teams of up to 20 players.

Zone Control

Broken Peninsula contains six large outposts and nine watchtowers, each of which has its own SIN network and each of which can be captured by any of the participating teams. To capture a location, you have to systematically take out a number of objectives to lower the force fields around the command terminal (outposts have more objectives than watchtowers). Once you gain access to the command terminal, you can interact with it to start a capture timer of two to five minutes (depending on the location) which will begin counting down to zero. If the team who owns the location does not stop the hack before the time runs out, the attacking team gains control of that location. Once you have control, you gain access to a number of benefits including turrets that you can deploy at various hard points around the base, repair kits that you can use to repair damaged objectives, and a variety of weaponized vehicles (including LGVs and MGVs). You can also donate crystite resonators (which players drop when they are killed by another player) to upgrade your bases, which makes them harder to capture (by increasing the amount of objectives) and provides access to better technology (like advanced vehicles).

Collect Resources

Your primary goal when playing in Broken Peninsula is to gather as many resources as you can. However, since Broken Peninsula is so far away from New Eden and its regular thumper delivery systems, resource collection works somewhat differently. On top of the benefits listed above, having control of a location also grants you access to “Short Range Thumpers” (SRTs). SRTs function very similarly to regular thumpers, but with a few key differences. First, SRTs can only be deployed within the SIN radius of the base or tower they are acquired from. Second, when you send back an SRT, the resources it gathered are not automatically credited to you. Instead, these resources are stored inside the base that the SRT came from. Periodically, the base will arcport all of the resources that have been stored within it back to safety in New Eden. At that point, those resources will be permanently credited to whichever team controls the base at the time and be split evenly amongst all of the team members. What this means is if you have gathered a large amount of resources inside a base, but then another team comes and takes over the base before that arcport takes place, the other team will get all of those resources, not you.

This restriction applies to more than just resources gathered with SRTs, as well. Any resources that you pick up off the ground are not safe until you have deposited them in an arcporter and successfully defended the base for the duration of the arcport. In addition, if you are killed, you will drop any resources that you have picked up but not yet delivered to an arcporter.

Since this is Open World PvP, it wouldn’t be complete without the ability to attack other people who are working on gathering resources, and take those resources for yourself. When attacking another team’s SRT, you have a couple of options for how to approach it. The first option is to simply try and destroy the thumper before its defenders can kill you or drive you away. If you are successful, the thumper will drop a very small portion of the resources it contained for anyone to pick up and run off with. For those who don’t mind a little extra risk for a larger reward, you also have the option of trying to kill all of the players defending the thumper and then interact with it to hack it. If you manage to do that successfully, the thumper will still be destroyed, but will drop a much larger portion of the resources contained within. Don’t forget, even if you successfully take out a thumper and steal its resources, those resources are still not safe until you make it back to a base you control, deposit them in the base’s arcporter, and successfully defend it until they are arcported to safety.

PvE Elements

When playing in Broken Peninsula, competing players are not your only opposition. Dropping an SRT will spawn the usual array of creatures that are attracted to the noise it generates. In addition, wandering encounters will spawn throughout the zone, meaning you may run into bandits, superbugs, or possibly even Melding Tornados while playing PvP.

By far your biggest non-player opponents in Broken Peninsula are the Chosen. The Chosen know of the value of the area, and they know that the Accord cannot afford the resources to properly secure it. As such, they will do anything in their power to prevent humans from transporting resources back to New Eden. This means that squads of Chosen will drop in and attack bases or thumpers in the area. On occasion, you may even run into Chosen Incursions or Death Squads.

This Open World PvP is primarily intended to be end-game content, and as such the NPCs and mobs within Broken Peninsula are balanced to be max-level appropriate. Players of lower levels are certainly more than welcome to participate, and those of a high enough skill level will likely be able to make an impact, but they will definitely have to tread lightly.
